NEW_PARAGRAPH FONET is a fiber-optic Ethernet implementation based on anactive star and synchronous link signalling. A variety of complex,multihierarchy networks can be constructed with just two types ofcomponents: a 12-port active star and a fiber-optic transceiver. Any nodecomplying with Ethernet V2.0 or IEEE 802.3 (IOBASE5) can be connecteddirectly to FONET. Network expansion is straightforward; using existingStar ports or adding stars when necessary.Several levels of reliability are incorporated into the system. Twolevels of Jabber protection provide immunity controller, transceiver, andfiber-link failures with easy recovery. Automatic main link redundancyand a backup power supply connection are provided in case of a failure.Features include:

AUI compatibility with Ethernet V2.0 and IEEE 802.3.
Hierarchical star, using two components -- a fiber-optic active Star

Network diameter up to 4 km (2.5 miles).

protection.
